Nick’s journey to confidence and advocacy
Nick moved into one of our supported living homes in Lancashire over five years ago. Life felt uncertain at the time. He needed support with everyday tasks. This included cooking, cleaning, and managing his shopping.
With person-centred support and a team who believed in him, Nick began to gain confidence. He started to build a life that reflects who he is.
Building skills and hobbies
One of his earliest achievements was learning to cook for himself. It is now a real passion. “Spaghetti bolognese is my go-to,” he says proudly.
Beyond practical skills, Nick has grown socially. Once quite reserved, he now takes part in activities he loves. These range from drama clubs and gardening to visiting new places like York.
Celebrating progress
In 2024, Nick’s progress was recognised when he won the Independence Award at the Best Lives Awards. He was nominated by several people across the charity. It was a well-earned celebration of his resilience and his willingness to share his journey.
“I feel like I’m moulding a generation of people… I’m changing the outlook of autism through the work that I do.”

Training NHS professionals
These days, Nick uses his lived experience to help improve healthcare. He works with the Oliver McGowan Training Programme.
Nick delivers live Zoom sessions to NHS professionals. His goal is to raise awareness around autism and the importance of reasonable adjustments in care.
Shaping the future with confidence
Nick is also a proud member of Voice for All. This is our client-led advocacy group where he helps ensure people with learning disabilities have a real voice in shaping their support.
Looking ahead, Nick is excited to keep growing. He is keen to build on his public speaking skills. He also hopes to explore opportunities in acting.
His message to others is simple. “Get support and don’t be afraid to communicate any fears or issues.”
It is advice born from experience. It serves as a reminder that the right support can lead to extraordinary things.
