Disability Pride Month: Meet Callum at Best Lives Merseyside Day Services
Disability Pride Month is a time to celebrate disabled people, challenge stigma, and recognise disability as a valued part of human diversity. Marked each July, it highlights identity, visibility, inclusion, and the ongoing importance of disability rights.
At Best Lives, these values are reflected in compassionate, person-centred support that helps people shine in their own unique way and live their best life, every single day. Callum’s story offers an example of what Disability Pride can look like in practice: confidence, self-expression, friendship, and the freedom to make choices about everyday life.
Meet Callum
Callum is known for his bright personality and positive outlook on life. Callum has lived with cerebral palsy his whole life and continues to live with confidence, proud of who he is and the life he leads.
He enjoys dressing in colourful outfits and bold fashion choices that reflect his flamboyant personality and bring happiness to those around him.
He identifies as they/them but is also happy to be referred to as he/him, and that sense of identity and self-expression is an important part of what Disability Pride Month celebrates.
Independence and choice
When asked what makes him happy, Callum said “everything,” but especially his independence. As a wheelchair user, being able to make choices and take part in activities he enjoys helps him live each day to the fullest.
One of Callum’s favourite activities is Zumba, which takes place every Friday at Merseyside Day Services. He loves joining in, keeping active, and having fun with others, showing how inclusive activities can support wellbeing, confidence, and connection.
Another of Callum’s favourite things to do is meet up with his friends at the centre and take part in baking sessions at the Olive Tree Café.
He says he feels happiest when he is at Day Services, joining in with activities and socialising with friends.
Why Callum’s Story Matters
Callum’s story is a reminder that Disability Pride is about more than visibility alone. It is about belonging, independence, identity, community, and the right to live a full life without stigma.
At Best Lives, person-centred support helps make those values real every day. Through structured day services in Merseyside and personalised support across the North West, the we help people build confidence, enjoy meaningful activities, strengthen friendships, and live with greater independence. This Disability Pride Month, Callum’s journey shows what is possible when people are supported to be themselves, make choices, and thrive in their own unique way.
