How a career change became John’s calling

John has been part of the Best Lives community for over 25 years. However, a role in support work was not always the plan. Back in 2000, he worked as a security guard at our main Merseyside site, Thingwall Hall.

Over time, he got to know the tenants and staff. When a vacancy opened up, he took a chance on a career change. “I didn’t think I would like it,” he admits. “But I love it. That is why I have stayed so long.”

Leading with care

Today, John is a Lead Support Worker in supported living in Merseyside. His role blends day-to-day care with planning and coordination. From managing rotas and supporting his team to helping tenants with personal care, John keeps things running smoothly.

He has supported the same residence for over two decades. “We know each other so well,” he says. “It is like a second home.”

John takes pride in creating moments the people we support can look forward to. This includes planning trips to Blackpool and organising festive turkey and tinsel parties.

“It’s not about the money. The richness comes from the people we support.”

Recognised and respected

John’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. He received the Best Lives 2024 Mission Statement Award for going above and beyond. This recognised his work supporting tenants and their families through life’s big moments.

“People thought I was a great Lead Support Worker,” he says simply. “That meant a lot.”

He also stepped back into leadership after a break and was fully supported by the team to grow in the role again. He notes that “Best Lives saw more in me than just care.”

More than just a job

John believes working with adults with learning disabilities offers something unique. “You can have real conversations. The trust they put in you is something special.” The role has also helped him build confidence in social settings, something he now helps his tenants with too.

He is a big advocate for the culture at Best Lives. His partner, who still works full-time in her 70s, has been part of the organisation for over 30 years. “There is no discrimination here. Everyone is valued.”
